Versant Professional English Test

What does Versant assess?

The Versant Professional English Test checks how well you know English in different work situations. It’ll give you more than just a score – it’ll helps students see how good they are at talking and understanding English at work.

The VPET is flexible – students can take it anytime, anywhere, thanks to the web-based ScoreKeeper platform. No need for a human examiner; it's all automated.

After you finish the test, students will get a report. It will show them how well they know English right now and give them ideas on how to get even better.

You can check out our Pearson office video here: Versant Professional English Test - Test Taker Overview

Or read the following fact sheets, here: Versant Professional English Test Fact Sheet

How to enroll?

Fluentbe will contact the students. After completing a dedicated number of lessons, we, as Fluentbe, will get in touch with the students' company's coordinator to decide if the student should get an invitation to the Versant test.

If we get confirmation to proceed, we will notify the students. The test will be accessible for two weeks from the allocation date.

During this step, the students’ proficiency level will be determined. There are two levels – Level 1 (CEFR pre-A1 to B1+) and Level 2 (CEFR B1+ to C2), representing lower and higher difficulty levels respectively.

Good news! The Versant English Placement Test is at the student’s service 24/7. No need to schedule an appointment!

How long does it take?

The test lasts about 60 minutes, and the best part is, you can do it right from home or office. However, we strongly suggest following our technical guidelines. They play a crucial role in the student’s success, ensuring a smooth experience and giving them peace of mind. They will need to use a speaker (or a headset) to hear the recordings, and a microphone to record their answers.

The test consists of ten parts (A to J), each assessing different language skills. Each section has its time limits.

Difficulty increases with each question.

Total Questions: 8

Part F - Response Selection

They hear a sentence followed by three response choices. Select the correct response within 8 seconds.

Total Questions: 8

Part G - Passage Comprehension

They listen to a short passage and answer three comprehension questions within 10 seconds each.

Part J - Story Retellings

This is a speaking activity and they’ll need to use their microphone to record their voice. They'll listen to three short stories. Or read the following fact sheets, here: Versant Professional English Test Fact Sheet

How can the students prepare?

To prepare for the Versant Professional English Test, they can forget about exam strategies. It's all about real-life skills.

What can they do to prepare?

  • Attend classes regularly

  • Participate actively in both speaking and interactive activities during your lessons

  • Do the pre-lesson activities in your Student Space to prepare for the class

  • Complete the homework activities after each lesson

  • Enhance pronunciation and practice commonly mispronounced words, especially crucial in speaking sections - pay attention to their teacher’s pronunciation and corrections

  • Use the Ask AI tool in your Student Space - copy and paste one of the tasks and ask AI to prepare a practice task for them. They can you make a request like: ‘Prepare a (name of the exam task) task to practice for Versant Professional English Test:.....’

  • Familiarise themselves with Versant test sections and question types for confident navigation

  • Use the Flashcards and other tools available in their Student Space to have more practice

  • Seek feedback from their teacher for speaking and writing improvement.

They have the option to purchase sample tests here, but, unfortunately, we don't offer them at Fluentbe. Important note: Practice tests purchased on the site are in a fixed format, so questions do not vary from test to test. This means that if they purchase more than one Versant English Test, they will receive the same questions on every test.

What technical equipment do the students need to take the Versant exam?

  • Device: Use a desktop or laptop; mobile devices may not be supported. Have an alternative device as a backup.

  • Internet: Ensure a stable, high-speed internet connection. Have an alternative as a backup.

When will they have results?

The results will be sent to the student’s email, and their coordinator will be in the copy.

Detailed score report covers their overall score on the Global Scale of English (10-90) and individual skill scores in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. It also gives a deep dive into their language proficiency and provides specific suggestions for improvement. All scores align with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) levels.

The test gets evaluated using Pearson's AI scoring tech. It's speedy, fair, and consistent, cutting out any human bias related to things like race, age, gender, or accent. AI makes sure their language skills get assessed efficiently and accurately, making the evaluation process reliable and standardized.
